In the 1980s, the affair between the then 36-year-old Gracie (Julianne Moore) and 13-year-old Joe (Charles Melton) was a scandalous affair and a feast for the tabloids. More than 20 years later, the couple lead a seemingly perfect suburban life with a nice neighborhood, a well-tended garden and three almost grown-up children. But their domestic bliss is disrupted when the famous and popular Hollywood actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) arrives to research her upcoming starring role in a movie about Gracie. As Elizabeth insinuates herself into the daily lives of Gracie and Joe, the painful facts of what happened back then come to light and rekindle buried feelings.
